Synopsis: An epidemic of smallpox sweeps Bath. Dr. Steven Monks and his wife, Julie, an ex-nurse, devote themselves to fighting the epidemic. Julie falls a victim but slowly recovers and confesses her matrimonial problems to Father Maguire. Party-loving Ruth Preston, wife of a colleague of Steven's, with whom he once had an affair, disappears and Preston wants Steven to confess to Julie. Father Maguire also insists upon this to re-establish Julie's confidence. A new victim is reported from a semi-derelict hotel. On arrival Steven recognises Ruth's belongings and a full scale search for her begins. Later Ruth, now desperately ill, phones Steven. He and Julie go to the hotel to find it blazing. Ruth has set fire to it to prevent the disease spreading.
